torn ligaments are extremely painful and will not show on an xray. an "avulsion" of your finger would more than likely show protusion of the bone through the skin. if you are concerned, get a second opinion..a torn ligament however will generally be more painful than a fracture.
If your finger was broken you would not be able to move it at all and yahoo ans. is the wrong place for a 2nd opinion, you need to see a Doctor other then the one that you seen in the first place. A torn ligiment is very painful and you should have some sort of wrap on the finger and hand to limit the movement to promote the healing. It will be sore for awhile and the less you move it the faster it will heal.(How did you do this?)
