Answer:
Low potassium can cause muscle spasms and cramps. Eat a banana or some spinach (unless you have kidney failure or you're allergic).
your doctor may (have already) prescribe(d) some muscle relaxers like flexeril or skelaxin.
Heat works well for muscle spasms -- a good heat pack is to use an old sock. Fill it with rice, sew it shut, and pop it in the microwave. I'd do like . . . a minute at a time for maybe 4 or 5 minutes. Be sure to put a towell between the sock and your back --while it may not feel hot at first, it will . . . the rice is GREAT at retaining heat, it'll work for a while, can be re-used frequently, and helps to relax the muscles.
Massages are always nice -- some fun oils like lavender or tea-tree may make it more enjoyable.
Anti-inflamatories (if you doctor didn't prescribe anything) like asprin, ibuprofen, and aleve may offer SOME comfort (although, probably not much).
Stretches like sitting with your legs apart and leaning in toward the center, then reaching your arms over and leaning sideways may also help.
I think I've heard of this before. If my memory is correct it is either a calcium or vitamin deficiency...Try taking a multivitamin in the morning might help
