Do you like patients prescribing medicines for serious behavioral disorders?

in mental health category, i have come across some answers by people who suffer from bi-polar disorders, prescribing medicines to people , suffering from severe mental disorders like depression, bi-polar diseases. i feel, only a qualified psychiatrist should prescribe drugs and have an authority to give advise. i also feel that these people without any knowledge and practical experience in mental health sciene , by prescribing drugs and giving advise are causing immense damage to the society. what is your opinion?

Answer:
I think ByeDr.com is just a place to bounce ideas off each other. A place to learn something by someone Else's
experiences.
But yes you are correct, your medicine will not work for me, according to your history, physical makeup and over all health, one should never even suggest what may or may not be wrong with another person.
This is really a melting pot for ideas..the most important one
see your Doctor for a complete blood/chemistry workup, history and tests.
I also work in the medical field and would be sorry amiss to even suggest what might be wrong with someone.thank you
Yes. I am with you with only qualified psychiatrist should be doing that kind of stuff. Because it could cause damage
Patients are not "prescribing" medications for others. It often helps to talk with others who have been in the same situation as another and information is made so available now days that typically people are aware they are just asking about choices or gathering more information. They are still going to need to ask there Dr.'s and get their opinions and ultimately it will be up to the Dr. to advise the patient what to take. A Dr. must prescribe a medication. I know that I want to know more than what my Psychiatrist tells me in 5 minutes about a medication if someone out there has previous experience even after I have gathered information about what I am putting into my body. It is not doing damage. It is educating. There is a huge difference. Often times people can feel alone or be so afraid to take the medicines that it helps them. The only time it would be doing damage is if a patient did not take their medication as their Dr. prescribed as a result.
Doctor's as a whole are very aware of their patients needs and are usually very careful to whom they prescribe drugs too. I think that if a doctor has spent all those year in uni and treating sick people then they have earned the right

The medical system would be in utter disarray if it was just Left to the specialists as the overload would be chronic and the patients would just slip into the cracks
they are only giving advice based on their experience. they can't prescribe. that can only be done by a licensed doctor. sharing experiences can be a good thing. just because they have a disorder doesn't mean they can't be treated and it doesn't mean they are crazy. i think your attitude is a bit small minded and inaccurate.
People are much more willing to research and learn about medical conditions and treatments than before, and there is much more information out there for the average consumer of mental health care services. People have always compared notes about medications and treatments, even before the Internet made that possible. One hopes that people take things with a grain of salt. I don't see how you can reverse this trend. Fortunately, medications used in psychiatry are available by prescription only. My own position is: go ahead, read, research, disucss and compare. But have your bullsh*t detector turned on to full power and realize that what works with one person might not be appropriate for another. In the end, the doctor decides--that's what he or she is paid to do.
1. patients don't prescibe; doctors do.

2. doctors often have never been under the influence of the drugs they prescibe and have no idea how much they affect the people's lives. only someone who has taken the medication knows what it is like.

3. sorry, i work in the medical field and i see a lot of disregard for the patient from professionals. an overreliance on medication is also a problem.
My opinion is that if someone listens to other "patients" and does what they tell him or her to do without consulting their doctor first, then those people are really stupid.
And no, I don't think that those "patients" are any more of a danger to society than anyone else. Because ultimately, the responsibility is with the ones who pick up the "advice" without questioning it. Anyone who's half-way firing on all cylinders would check the facts first.

I mean, would you shoot yourself in the head just because someone "prescribes" you with it being the permanent fixture for your migraines?

Your point is that this place, ByeDr.coms, should be a place where only specialists of the field should have a say. Technically, that meant if Yahoo would enforce such a rule, you'd have to have a way to identify everyone's proffession with 100% certainity.
