Do I need new antidepressants or other meds? I have new symptoms and my doctor

I thought my Wellbutrin XL had stopped working because I am sleeping more, lack motivation (fair --> better side of poor), increasingly irritable and eating more (hungrier, mindless eating). My old symptoms were sleeping for about 12-14 hours a day, constant anxiety, crying frequently in private, poor hygiene, and essentially merely existing; all have been curbed drastically. I'm on the highest dose. I seem to relapse every time I go off a medication and Wellbutrin seems to be doing what the SSRIs failed to do. Because I cannot afford a seventh relapse (I will likely lose my job), I absolutely do not want to even attempt to go off Wellbutrin again. My doctor suggested Straterra or Effexor. I am unwilling to take the risk that it might not work for me which she trivializes.
These new symptoms are consistent with atypical depression. Should I/how do I bring up this possibility? The txs are MAOIs, SSRIs, stimulants and Lamictal. This would be in addition to, not in place of Well XL

Answer:
Dear friend. If your medications are not effective then it is necessary that your doctor either change them or change the dosages. Sorry to hear that your DR is trivializing your concerns. Do you think perhaps you need to find another doctor? Is your doctor a psychopharmacologist? I didn't have any success with therapists and MD's until I saw a psychopharmacologist. This is an MD with a specialty is Psychiatry who knows a GREAT deal about medications and treats the symptoms with medications and leaves therapy and group sessions up to others. He/She can give you a referral to a group or a therapist but in the meantime will scientifically approach a drug regimine that best suits your needs. If you need further information please go to Miami New Times on the web and search under "The Last Temptation of George Petrie". It is my story and for years I was getting the wrong medications and being treated by physicians who "trivialized" my symptoms. Thankfully I found the right approach. Best wishes to you
you sound very informed - always a good thing

maybe it is time to change doctors, when they stop listening to what we have to say or even making time for us -- then it is time to get someone who will

good luck

p.s. if you want to give this doc one last chance you could always email/print this question and its answers to them to show you mean business
pills are not the answer. As a med student, I am frustrated with the perceived "magic bullet" people have about pharmaceuticals. Therapy should be first in treatment, along with a healthy diet, exercise, and vitamins. Join a gym, cut out junk food, try not to pay attention to propaganda so much, and set and strive for a goal. Studies have shown that on average an american sees or hears 3000 advertisements in a single day. You tune it out of your conscious but it becomes part of your environment in which you may consider yourself inferior from. Vitamin B12 will help your body deal with stress and give you energy. Therapy will further help you identify specific things that cause you stress and provide you with tools that help you deal with them effectively. Pills are only to supplement this treatment, they are not a cure all and are actually a social epidemic that needs to be dealt with.

You are seeing a therapist. Good, are you getting anything from it? Are you finding yourself identifying certain stresses in your life and dealing with them with tools your therapist has given you? If not, then demand it from him/her or change therapists. The more control you take over your own life, the better off you will be.
first off if your doctor isn't listening to you it's time to find a new doctor. if you are having new symtoms then you may have to go on new drugs, either in conjunction with your old drugs or dropping your old drugs and starting with new drugs. which ever you do you need to discuss it in complete with your doctor. i was lucky i found a good doctor right off who explains things to me and we dicuss my treatment. you didn't say what youor illness is but i found a drug that is great. it is called seroquel. it works great on a lot of symtoms but doesn't leave me a walking zombie either.
Antidepressants can stop working. It is called tachyphylaxis sp? or poop out. I would see if you can see a psychiatrist and if you are already seeing one see if you can get a second opinion.
Fatigue, insomnia, mental confusion, anxiety, nervousness, mood swings, faintness, headaches, depression, phobias, heart palpitations, a craving for sweets, cold hands and feet, forgetfulness, dizziness, blurred vision, inner trembling, outbursts of temper, sudden hunger, allergies, and crying spells are signs of hypoglycemia. Drugs like the ones you’re taking won’t correct hypoglycemia.
