Answer:
If your cramps are NOT prolonged and debilitating I would try taking an aspirin (if you aren't allergic) one a day starting 3 days before your period and use a heating pad/take a soak in a hot bath, or even try yoga. I also had evening primrose oil on my list of remedies to try, but I haven't yet. It does seem readily available and affordable though so I suppose it is worth a try.
If your cramps ARE debilitating I would highly recommend reading the rest of my answer as I have been there myself, otherwise Good Luck with your search!
I always had bad cramps. I tried a lot of different things and nothing really worked. Doctors even put me on several pain killers and muscle relaxers. The best I could ever get was taking aspirin before my period and curling up with a heating pad on high until I feel asleep. I spent 10 years trying to find something to help me. I would recommend finding help earlier than I did because cramps can make you miss out of a lot of things. I missed a lot of high school and college because I literally could not leave my house I was hurting so bad.
If you are having debilitating cramps. I recommend seeing a doctor, preferably a gynecologist. Just to talk and tell them that you seriously have cramps. Sometimes people, even doctors, don't understand how bad they can be and you need to explain how they are effecting your life. I went through three doctors before I finally saw a Gynecologist and they told me I had premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Now, I am in no way saying that you have this, I am just letting you know that there are other causes of menstrual cramps besides just the usual period. Other causes include endometriosis, fibroid tumors, pelvic adhesions, and ovarian cysts. I know it's scary, but knowing is such a relief and you will be so much happier not having that burden every month.
I have not had a single cramp since being treated for PMDD and I never regret that embarrassing visit to my gyno. If you need further assistance please feel free to contact me. Good luck and I hope you find something that works for you!
heating pad
try a hot bath or a heating pad on your tummy. those always help me.

sit ups during. and working out a few days b4 ur period starts. Trust me I just started getting cramps at 30. I works. Keep ur body moving so the lining passes faster. Lying down and keeping still just prolonges the cramping. Just like painful gas ever1 tenses up and holds there breath and that's the worst thing 2 do.
lay in a warm bath or with a heating pad on your lower stomach, heat is the best thing that always helped me besides medicine. Also I think it is just reflex but if you haven't tryed it roll up in the fetal posititon.
A heating pad that is used for aromatherapy. It works wonders. Also, drinking tea with a small amount of lemon is another good home remedy. If all else fails, you're gonna have to probably consult your doctor.
Try a hot bath or a heating pad on your tummy! Drink hot tea or coco! The more you warm it up the better you will feel! Also exercise is great for cramps! Try riding your bike or takin' a walk or run! Keep the blood flowing literally! And Midol or pamprin doesn't hurt if its really bad! Feel better!
heating pad,a jump in the jacuzzi. Anything warm. Try Exercising, it will reduce the cramps. My husband used to put his warm hands on my abdomen or lower back and it used to feel so good! Take some Tylenol or pain killer and put something warm on the cramped area.
heating pads will help.
Some yoga positions will help stretch the lower abdomen where it hurts. That helped me some. Also, eat a banana or two. The potassium will help ease the cramping :)
